The debut EP from Chicago's Four Star Alarm is a promising post punk start point for a band bound to make noise. Featuring guitarist Jeff Dean of The Bomb and The Story So Far with newcombers Theodore Moss (Vocals) and Mike Horick (drums), 4SA takes cues from the mid 90's American indie underground while laying claim to a sound uniquely their own. Complete with grating guitars and windy city grit, there's no pretension here, only scratch and grind and some god damn good songwriting too. Their first CD out September 12th on THICK. The Methadones have posted a new songs from their new power-pop covers record "21st Century Power Pop Riot" on the band's MySpace page. That 12 song diddy is set for release in June. Punknews.org says "setting their sights on a collection of power pop classics from the likes of Cheap Trick, Gary Glitter, Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello. The three-chord punk rock sound of the Methadones meshes beautifully with these sugary hits and really highlights some lesser known but decidedly great slabs of power pop."

Pastepunk.com recently posted a feature on Hanalei consisting of a series of emailed interview questions and the subsequent honest and intimate answers from Brian Moss. It's a solid read... "what came back were answers that while lengthy, reached a level of depth and intimacy that most interviews seldom offer." Click URL for the article.

The May issue of Alternative Press magazine lists the THICK comp 'Magnetic Curses' in their list of 10 essential scene compilations, calling the CD "A snapshot of what it was like in the late '90s in Chicago to be young, dumb, and totally wasted."If they think that was good, wait til they get a load of the upcoming 'HAIR - CHICAGO PUNK CUTS' scene comp set for release in June.

Sick and tired of Gang of Four white boy disco wannabee's, the four began to write the songs that would end up on this EP. They enlisted old friends who were also finding their way in Los Angeles. Former Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow came out of early retirement to sing on a song and Juan’s old Brainiac bandmate John Schmersal added guitar "color" on everything. Yeah - it's pretty cool. Carmen Paradise has left Calliope for the Big Apple. She's a totally amazing person so if you live in NYC and happen to bump into her, welcome our friend with a hug (and don't pick her pocket in the process). The Lansing City Pulse wrote a nice article on Carmen's departure (click URL).

The Chicago Reader ran a nice preview up the upcoming Hanalei "Parts & Accessories" CD due out in March, comparing singer/songwriter Brian Moss to "Jeff Tweedy, Jon Langford, or latter-day Joe Strummer". Hanalei plays The Metro in Chicago tonight with our friends Wax On Radio and The Felix Culpa.

Haymarket Riot have announced a new 5 song Japanese only EP called "I Know What You Did" (enhanced with a 9 song live set from 2004) to be released on Stiff Slack Records (Japan). Oh yeah, there's a coinciding week long Japanese tour scheduled in April. When asked about the new songs , singer/ guitarist / evil genius Kevin J. Frank replied "It's our toughest stuff yet". Thank god for Japanese CD imports!

The CHICAGO READER has listed NEW BLACK's Time Attack CD in their top 10 indie releases of the year. "Taut, disciplined art-punk riffing" says Bob Mehr, "high points include the stiff-legged bounce of the title track, the goth-pop whimsy of "Devil in My Car," and the breathless, out-of-control momentum of "Seventeen."

The Chicago Tribune listed both NEW BLACK and THE BOMB in their top ten independent releases of 2005, calling New Black "Ferocious stuff" and siting The Bomb's "brisk melodies, anthem-ready choruses, brutish guitars and drums, all honed to a fine point". We're calling this one "HAIR - Chicago Punk Cuts" - expect a Warped Tour 06 debut.

Bummer. Due to major concerns with the legitimacy of Polarfest and it's promoter, Horace Pinker have decided to bow out of their mini-Canadian tour. Can't say we blame em' - It's cold up north this time of year. The Chicago show on the 22nd is still happening though, so no worries there.

The Tossers frontman stripped down and undone -- T. Duggins' first solo CD is set for release on January 24th. The Unholy Effers begin recording today at the Tiny Apertures Recording Studio in St. Louis. The band has pad-locked themselves inside and swallowed the key, so it may be a few days before we see them again. Probably a good thing since they haven't stopped talking about their damned Manley Dual Mono Mic Pre and an Empirical Labs Distressor for a month. Expect the debut long player from these poor cursed souls in spring '06.

Hanalei heads back into the studio in two weeks to record the follow up to the critically acclaimed 'We're All Natural Disasters' CD, only this time he not alone. Brian Moss aka Hanalei is now fully banded with players that include Pete Croke, Pete Tscoukas, and Jason Kyrouac (members of Rollo Tomasi, Archeology, and Pines), plus guests, Josh Staples (The New Trust/Velvet Teen), Joe Cannon (Early Risers/Afflictions/Check Engine), Edward Lo (Sleepout/May or May Not), and others. Tenatively titled 'Accident Report' expect an early spring release on THICK.

Hanalei have posted new demo tracks from their forthcoming album on the band's Myspace page (Click URL). The band is currently gearing up to hit the studio this fall to record the follow up to last years 'We're All Natural Disasters' CD. Look for a spring 2006 release. In the meantime, new tour dates have been posted including shows with Duvall, The Paperchase and The New Trust.

Feeny also recorded Small Brown Bike's "Nail Yourself to the Ground" EP & "the River Bend" CD, though is best know for his pedal steel work on Loretta Lynn's Grammy Award-winning album, Van Lear Rose. A dynamic threesome from central Michigan, LaSalle are post-rock balladeers that equally recall Karate, Jawbreaker and Doolittle era Pixies. Featuring the husband/wife team of Mike & Katy Reed plus long time friend and drummer Dan Jaquint (Mike & Dan of Small Brown Bike fame). Lasalle are scheduled to hit the studio throughout June & July for an October THICK release. The band has a demo track on the upcoming Mean it Man compilation. For those of you who speak German, OX Fanzine printed an interview with THICK founder and prez Zak Einstein in their latest issue (57). “Für mich war punkrock immer mehr eine Einstellung als ein Image. Gegen den Strom schwimmen. Das System umgehen. Umsturz.“ translation... “to me punk rock has always been more about attitude than image. Going against the grain. Skirting the system. Subversion.” or something like that.

x-SULLEN rock-god and drummer extraordinaire Scott Freeman has surfaced, fronting a new project called NEW EYES. Like Grohl before him, Freeman has moved from behind the kit to guitar and vocal duties. 10 New Eyes demo tracks are posted online – take a sneak peak by clicking the URL above.

the Hanalei "We're All Natural Disasters" CD is now in the THICK web store and available for pre-order. Starts shipping August 23rd, same day as the European release. In stores everywhere September 7th.

The Methadones new record “Not Economically Viable” is finally done and in production. The 12 song / 38 minute CD is set for release November 15th (11/1 in Europe). Keep an eye on the download page for a new MP3 in the very near future.

And Records in Japan is set to release Calliope’s Sounds Like Circles Feel CD at the end of the month complete with two bonus remix tracks from Ghostly International’s KILN & MIDWEST PRODUCT. Keep an eye out for imports. We’ll try to post at least one of the remixes on the THICK site around the release.
